Jason Stauffer’s Special Purpose
Jason Stauffer Exhibits “Purpose”
A Humorous Look at Social Assumptions & Expectations
Seattle, Wash. (January 22, 2008) A show in two parts, Jason Stauffer’s February solo exhibit consists of over thirty sculptures and photographs that depict the duel purpose of objects and people out of place but still finding “Purpose”. Humorous yet touching, the shows’ observation is focused on the social assumptions and expectations of how objects and people are anticipated to function – but do they? The bold work is aggressive in both content and intention. Stauffer uses gourds, metals, African porcupine quills and feathers to create this erotic exhibit.
The exhibition which starts February 7 – through the first week of March, is divided into two sets of works; one explores the purpose of humanity’s use of objects and the other, the purpose of humanity as an object. In creating a series of sculptures made from familiar items, they are combined to create familiar forms – however, nothing is what it seems and nothing is used as it should be.
The second part of the show is entitled “Waiters” a photographic series conceived while Stauffer was doing seasonal work at a resort lodge in Alaska. As much as he disliked the job, it allowed him to travel to amazing places to take the photos. “This series is about the soul search we’re all on as we transition from job to job trying to find our career. I think we’re all ‘waiters’ in a sense – some people drop the quest and stay where they are – others are always searching for their lives to begin,” says Stauffer.

Stauffer’s bold work is aggressive both in content and intention. Never apologizing for what his work is or what it has to say, Jason Stauffer is known for his sensitive interpretation of what could be seen as antagonistic and abrasive subject matter.
Stauffer’s art will be the backdrop for La Familia’s H’Art Dating Event, February 9, 7 – 10 p.m. and he will be on hand to discuss his work with the event’s participants.
For his exhibit, the gallery has created a complete, full-color catalogue of the artist’s show with commentary by Stauffer and curator, Lanae Rivers-Woods. “Purpose” will be published by La Familia Publishing and the catalogue will be available at the gallery on their website; www.lafamiliallc.com
